Dublin was founded by the Vikings. At the end of the 8th century Vikings began raiding Ireland and in the 9th century Norwegians used the mouth of the Liffey as a base from which to raid the rest of Ireland.

When they landed the Vikings dragged their ships up onto the beach and they built an earth rampart with a wooden palisade on top around this area to protect them more. Read more on the history of Dublin.

Dublin began as a Viking settlement in the 8th century. It became a prosperous trading place.

Christ Church was built by the Normans in the 12th Century on the site of an earlier Christian Church.

The Normans fortified the city building Dublin Castle and surrounding it with walls and towers. Only one tower now remains.

Trinity College founded in the 16th Century holds the Book of Kells and Durrows in its world famous library.

Beer has been brewed in Dublin since the Viking period. Stout porter was invented by the Guinness family in the 18th Century.

The 1916 rebellion began the final phase of the fight for independence and led to the foundation of the state in 1922.

The arms of the City of Dublin ever since the Norman period has been represented by a gold harp on a blue field.
